Event Recap :: Studio Q deCordova Visit

Photo by Marcus Hamblin
By Jim Hornor, B.Arch Candidate

On Saturday, April 28, 2012, members and friends of Studio Q enjoyed a visit to the deCordova Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA.

Photo by Marcus Hamblin
Established in the 1950s, the 35 acres of the beautifully landscaped gardens, well-maintained forests and lawns was originally home to art and sculpture collector, Julian deCordova. He traveled the world and selected artwork for his residence that "served as the medium for self-improvement and enlightenment." At the time of his death, deCordova gave his property to the town of Lincoln with the stipulation that the estate would become a public showcase of art.

The architecturally interesting security house was only a preview of the over 60 sculptural experiences that we encountered on the estate, Saturday morning. The first and probably most impacting piece that caught our eyes was The Musical Fence designed by Paul Matisse in 1980. The aluminum bars cast in reinforced concrete had a clear visual interest, but no disclaimer or instructions were needed when a few sticks were spotted in fixed containers on either end of the piece. In no time, we were all skipping alongside the sculpture dragging our sticks across the sounding bars.

Rain Gates designed by Ron Rudnicki in 2000, Male Baseball No.1 by Yoram Woldberger in 2009, and Requiem for the 20th Century by Nam June Paik in 1997 were some other notable installations that left an impact on our visit.

With an exploration of all the senses, our visit took advantage of the beautiful weather, picnic lunch, and artistically crafted sculptures as we prepare for the last few weeks of the semester come to a close.  A special thanks to Atelier for sponsoring our trip to de Cordova!

Event Recap :: Spirit Day 2011

Photo by Bonica Ayala
Over 30 members of the BAC community gathered together at noon in the McCormick Gallery on Thursday October 20, 2011 as part of the nationwide Spirit Day campaign and GLSEN Ally Week to show their support for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and ally (GLBTA) community.

Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.

Boston Architectural College is one of 22 colleges and universities worldwide who publicly announced their support of Spirit Day on the GLAAD website. To read more about the BAC's Diversity Action Plan, click here.

This year, the BAC also asked our community members who couldn't make the photo shoot at noon to email us photos of their support from afar. Click here to see those photos, as well as pictures of the BAC Library's purple book display, which will be up through the end of October.

Today at noon, Studio Q held a National Coming Out Day Celebration in The Loft. More than twenty students attended to show their support for the GLBT population on campus, as well as eleven administrators. Spirit Day :: Go Purple

Spirit Day :: Go Purple

Thursday October 20, 2011 at 12:15 pm
Sidewalk Outside 320 Newbury Street
Rain location: McCormick Gallery

Show Your Spirit on October 20, 2011! Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.

Getting involved is easy - we are asking BAC students, instructors, and staff members to wear purple on Thursday October 20th to show their support of the GLBT community on campus.  We will be gathering outside 320 Newbury Street at 12:15 pm to take a group photo and some candid shots.

Are you working during our photo shoot? Email Becky Anderson a photo of you at work in your spirited purple clothes to be added to the album of pictures we collect.

Studio Q Newport Mansions Tour :: Re-cap

by Derek Camara

Last Saturday, Studio Q enjoyed a beautiful day down in Newport, RI touring the famous gilded age mansions.

First stop was the Elms Mansion, built in 1901 and modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside of Paris. After our tour, we stopped for a quick lunch at the Elms Carriage House Cafe, located in the elaborate classic revival gardens behind the Elms. Next stop was the opulent Breakers Mansion, a massive Italian Renaissance 70 room 130,000 SF "summer cottage" for the Vanderbilt family, built in 1895 on the Newport coast. Last stop was the Mable House, built in 1892 with a reported 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Following the tour and concluding the day, we had tea at the Chinese Tea House, located behind the Marble House on the Newport coastal cliffs.

Click HERE to see the slide show! A special thanks goes to Atelier at the BAC for sponsoring our trip to Newport!
