Studio G ArchitectsBy Rilwan Kujenya
Studio G Architects, an architecture firm based in Jamaica Plain, Boston, focuses heavily on conscious and sustainable designs. As the firm’s website states, “We draw upon a 15-year history as Gail Sullivan Associates maintaining its essential values and augmenting them with vibrant, multi-disciplinary capacity, broadened client-base and geographic reach. We offer a wide range of design services to public and private clients, tackling each project and each client’s agenda with a fresh and creative approach."
Gail Sullivan is still the principle, and there is a predominance of women employees. The firm is made up of eight people, many of whom are AIA-registered architects; the majority is also LEED certified. The firm even employs one of our own, a fellow BAC student, Tearar Chan, who is currently a Bachelor of Interior Design candidate.
Studio G produces an impressive number of designs in child-care, educational, and religious institutions, as well as community-sensitive mixed-use developments and affordable housing. The designs are environmentally sensitive, people-centered, place-specific, and mixed-use.
Once recent project is the Centre Wise Lamartine Mixed-Use Development, which is located adjacent to the Orange Line T stop Jackson Square in Jamaica Plain. “The program includes retail and office space at the street level and affordable housing on the upper three floor,” says Studio G. It is a total of 40,000 sq.ft.
The building makes use of fiber-cement clapboards on the rear exterior and passive-solar energy. It meets Energy Star and LEED standards, and has an array of photovoltaic panels on the roof. I think its a great development for JP, and it is a very interesting project. More info on the project can be found here.
